Just a remark : Generally, 3D matrix methods can spare any assumed or arbitrary position as an input. The reason is they are not based on a differential formulation, but on a global formulation.
With my own method ("Coplanar Vertices Method") the assumed position is used only to find its distance to the computed solution at the end of the process.
In fact what you need is only a sextant and a small computer: a palm PC or a smartphone can do the job, as well as a few "old" TI or HP devices (HP200XL is a famous one).
