How > 'tight' do things have to be? I think you should consider using a liquid artificial horizon rather than the mirror (or at least get a better mirror). Polaris is tough because it's not very bright, so it may be best to do some bright objects in the artificial horizon first (the sun is probably the best one to begin with). Ken Muldrew.
