If you promise not to laugh- I've been following Jupiter-Venus distance for the past month and I had the same problem with focus. Now, if truth be known, I'm using my iPhone 5s. Turns out it has a devil of a time focussing on a star. I downloaded a couple of camera apps which allow fixing the focus and it made a tremendous difference.
In terms of CN, I've tried to calibrate the sensor by snapping a pic of Arcturus and Ursa Major. I compared the pixel positions of all the stars with respect to each other, and the calibration of pixels per degree was dismally uncertain. Looking into it more now, but I suspect it's pincushion distortion. The stars did fill the entire field. I'll try to center the bowl in the field and see what I get in terms of consistency.
