Aha. So that's why you were asking about that particular mid-Pacific island! For those of you who have joined my "Celestial Navigation in the Age of Sail" workshop, the island in question was also visited by the whaleship Charles W Morgan in 1897. We talk about that visit in some detail in the workshop. The raid in 1865 that Josh Carty directs us to in his latest puzzle targeted the New England whaling fleet — the dreaded moral and econmic enemy of the Confederate States of America.
And David P, yes indeed, it's one of the major islands in that huge, but sweet, island group.
