If you live in or about Edmonton, in the midst of the Canadian prairies, it will certainly surprise (and possibly please) you to discover that the Alberta Offshore Sailing Association will be teaching a course in celestial navigation this summer. Lake Wabamun, an hour west of the city, is a large lake that offers a true horizon from the classroom on the western shore, looking to the east. So it will be a very practical, hands-on course meeting on three consecutive Saturdays from 5:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Every student will take an array of planet/star/moon/sun shots and plot fixes from them.
Instruction will be as realistic as we can make it within the bounds of a 15 hour course, a thousand miles from the nearest salt water. We will even drive down the lakeshore to actually perform, not just imagine, running fixes.
The class was announced on Wednesday, and is already filled to 50% of capacity. So if you are interested, you may want to move smartly.
Information is at www.TEOG.net/Nav.
