Maritime History & Celestial Navigation from the 19th Century

Sound interesting? I'm teaching my online workshop "Celestial Navigation in the Age of Sail" this weekend (Atlantic session, Sat/Sun starting at 1600 UT, 11am EST) or this coming week (Pacific session M/T/W starting at 2300 UT, 6pm EST). We learn how it was done directly from primary source logbooks and navigation calculations. It's like sneaking up on those navigators in a time machine and peeking over their shoulders! We'll follow a complete Pacific voyage on the famous whaleship Charles W Morgan in the 1890s from San Francisco to the whaling grounds around the Kurile Islands north of Japan. We'll learn to navigate by the Sun and stars using their methods but modernized for the 21st century, too! It's easy, fast, efficient celestial navigation pulled directly from the Age of Sail... Navigators who have learned the traditional intercept method from the late 20th century, this is a chance to understand it all from an entirely different perspective. No GHA or LHA Aries... no Ho and Hc. We navigate by turning our sextants into sundials and applying the equation of time... It's history, science, math and damn good fun! Even if you have never studied celestial navigation and are intrigued by a historical perspective, everything you need is included in this workshop (well, everything except the sextant, watch, and the beautiful oceangoing sailboat! ...you figure out where to get those, and then you'll be all set to go).

As with all my workshops, if you have paid and attended a prior run of this workshop, you can repeat for just $19.95.
