I'm teaching my class "Celestial Navigation in the Age of Sail" this coming weekend at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, CT. This is the tenth year that I have been teaching these classes at Mystic Seaport Museum. In this workshop, you'll learn how to navigate just as they did thoughout most of the 19th century and into the early 20th century, using "Noon Sun" sights for latitude and "Time Sights" and chronometers for longitude, using traditional almanac data and mathematical tables. We examine the historical methods in the context of a fascinating year-long voyage of the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, which we will go aboard and tour during the class, and we'll also apply these methods directly to real navigation today. The "Age of Sail" techniques never became obsolete. They merely fell out of fashion in passing decades.

And since the Marion-Bermuda Race is coming up in just a couple of months, we'll also discuss a variety of special sights that can be taken during that race thanks to the special timing and the relatively fixed range of positions during the race.
Why attend a class with a human teacher? Why not just learn it online? Because that's luxury. Learn from a talented teacher (yep: me!) in a live class, and you're following the lead of the wealthy and poweful. Seriously. Read here: Human Contact Is Now a Luxury Good.
