Frank,
I am also wondering about 19th and early 20th century navigation methods on the Great Lakes. Like you I suspect that dec reckoning was the preferred method of most captains. I cannot find any authoritative material on this subject. Does anyone have access to ships logs in sufficient quantity that we could draw a reasonable conclusion?
