How do we know this? It could be a long lens, placed well off the platform at Isengard's top (on the eagle's back perhaps), assuming I'm thinking of the correct scene. Maybe the lens focal length could be recovered from the detailed perspective of Saruman's face (nose vs. eyes), but that would be difficult even given an accurate 3D model. If we assume the camera was on the stargazing platform, though, that would constrain its maximum distance from Saruman to 10 meters or so.
But yes, if the angular size of the Moon was five degrees, that would be hundreds of millions of years ago, and so they'd be somewhere on Pangaea. :-)
