Having been following this thread with some interest, two "magic movie moments" spring to mind: Way back I recall Errol Flynn reading his ship's position straight off the sextant arc.. was it Bligh of the Bounty 1950s? The other was more recent and involved a glossy brochure by the Australian Film Board showing Captain Cook, complete with tricorn hat, taking a sight with an obviously Mumbai Brass instrument, pity, he was a man ahead of his time as it was a micrometer sextant, also, all the shades were down, must have been a very bright day!
