Wasn’t it the Enigma code machine on the captured U-505 submarine which helped the Allies in deciphering the code?
Enigma machines and codes were being captured from at least 1941, but like everything else in war, the machines kept being improved and codes changed regularly. Therefore, whilst helpful, captured material had a limited lifespan and subsequent captures were always valuable. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/20/enigma-code-u-boat-u559-hms-petard-sebag-montefiori . Hugh Sebag-Montefiori is a very good author. He wrote a very good book on the retreat to Dunkirk. DaveP
