Here's an earlier description:
"there is one WW II naval movie (can't remember the title) where John Wayne is shown taking a cut with a sextant while standing on the bridge wing. After the cut is taken he turns the sextant to its side and looks at the sextant's arc and calls out the lat and lon."

There was another similar story in the archives except in that case the mariner with the magic sextant was played by Errol Flynn.
