David,
I used to have DVDs of the original TV series (in German , English sub titles)) but they have gone walkabout, as our Aussie cousins say. Have ordered a new one for £5 from Amazon. Will let you know when I receive it. I have a strong (but probably senile) feeling that the original does do the right thing re Jupiter and Saturn. Certainly, the book does. Let’s see. Either way, fascinating stuff. They definitely relied totally on cel nav then. By the way, I have some historical evidence that the German version of the Bygrave slide rule. ( a very good, if not better copy) was issued to the German Navy, in particular the U Boat fleet. (compact, quick etc) However, no mention of that , sadly in this very good and technologically accurate saga.
Francis.

Yes, fiction aside, the real thing would probably have required the sun to be just below the horizon to see the brighter planets and navigational stars, even with that telescope. This wouldn’t have been good for filming, so I suppose the film version had to be a compromise. I’ve always wanted a copy of the video. I found the music haunting. I thought I was getting a really good deal when I bought a copy really cheaply near the north end of the Fasterbokanalen in Sweden. Unfortunately, when I got home and put it on the player, it turned out to have sub-titles in Swedish. I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised. Dave
