love the idea of using an orange/globe for direct plots.
A 45ft globe a bit too big for my ship. What about say just one quarter,/quadrant of "peel" , with correct spherical curves, say about 6ft high, a few feet wide? My question for the clever nav triangle experts is, do you need the whole globe, or can you re-do the numbers (eg degrees over 90) to get everything onto just one quadrant? Then you could build a big quarter peel and plot direct? Still too big for my little ship, but perhaps could have been ok for a big sailing vessel? Page 87 of John Karl's book suggests a big orange peel quarter would do for lunar clearance as well?
Does some lunatic want to try this? I might later, if you guys tell me about the maths.
