David - I've been dabbling with this, on and off. I haven't yet finished but here are some useful sites.
This site gives instructions for using the rather complicated NASA projection software. I did have to install Java from Oracle which was a pain. If you get a star map then it is quite easy using these tools to makes the gores. Not sure about the sticky bit yet.
