    Don, thanks

"Sea of Gray - The Around-the-World Odyssey of  the Confederate Raider Shenandoah" by Tom Chaffin states that the Shenandoah covered 58,000 miles and became the only Confederate ship to circumnavigate the globe.
She destroyed 32 vessels, ransomed 6 others and taken 1,053 prisoners. In all, the value of the vessels and cargos destroyed were estimated to be $1.4 million. "The last gun in defense of the South was fired from her deck"  Captai James Waddell said. p 357

When the ship and crew surrendered November 8, 1865 -- 51 chronometers, five empty cases for chronometers, ten sextants and quadrants in the locker, thirteen of the same outside (twenty-three in all), three compasses, seven marine clocks and two barometers, plus a huge cargo of stores such as power, tobacco, some gold/silver, tea, beef, port, sperm oil casks, spirits, charts etc.

A clear indication of how prised navigation equipment was.
