Hi John, yes cel nav has been used extensively on land in addition to Ron's reference to Lewis and Clark's uses of Lunar Distance to find Greenwich time for Longitude surveyors and exploreres relied on Polaris and Sun equal altitude obs for Latitude ,azimuths,etc. Maps would not be possible without cel nav.
