    Thanks for the clarification Randall.  That is indeed what I suspected.

    Your findings about difficulties at large angles is spot on.  I have tried many times to perform a back sight of Polaris from my south facing ocean beach to no avail.  The instrument is preset, I can see Polaris when I look directly at it, and yet, it eludes me.

    The 100 degrees is the AH DOUBLED angle. At higher altitudes the arc of the sexant rock is more pronounced. It is more difficult to get accurate sights above 100 degrees.
