Hello Stuart, It's my impression that both Chichester's Sun Compass and his Star Compass were intended for land navigation by hikers and such...the latitude coverage would do for much of Europe. As I'm sure you know, Chichester went on to found a small map making/guide book business. I've read that his first commercial success came from buying hundreds and hundreds of surplus army (and perhaps RAF) maps and turing them into jigsaw puzzels. I 'd guess that the Sun and Star compass books germinated in his "Flower" planisphere which was part of the Observer's astro nav series that Chichester wrote during the war.
I'd like copies of the books, but they are rather expensive these days.
Cheers,
