I’m hanging onto to my solution to Christmas Quiz No3 for a day. No, not because I’m still working out how to do it myself, but to give more people a chance to have a crack at it.
Clues:
1. Fly out east as in Quiz No2.
2. After one hour, look back and note where the ship is.
3. Set up an interception on her allowing for her motion. I.e. Compound with the velocity of the helicopter a velocity equal and opposite to that of the ship.
4. Fly back to intercept the ship not forgetting to allow for the effect of wind on the helicopter.
5. Calculate the total time.
6. This will be less than three hours, so multiply times and distances (but not speeds and headings) by a scale factor to ensure the total trip lasts three hours. DaveP
