David C,
I have very much enjoyed these little NZ news articles you've found. New Zealand is a bit unique for having been "off the grid" in terms of longitude. One can get approximate longitudes by astronomical methods for a few key points, and then the rest of the counrty is mapped by ground-based surveying methods. Thus the relative longitudes from point to point were quite accurate, but all were dependent on the uncertainty of the baseline (and somewhat approximate) astronomical longitude. This made chronometer management somewhat different there for a few decades.
