I'm after some tips, please, on the best way of cleaning the silver arc on an old Vernier sextant. It's been left nicely alone and unpolished, with the result that the arc divisions are as good as new and quite unsullied. Same applies to the Vernier. I am anxious to keep it that way. So I want to know about gentle techniques for cleaning it up, without any need to get it bright. I have heard of the virtues of rubbing with breadcrumbs. I would like to hear about the experience of others.
