I must relate a recent event on an ordinary car ferry.  Then ask a question.

It was daytime , windy, rough, routine small car ferry crossing. I've been on this ferry many times. The ship was "crabbing" in too fast.  I realized the problem because I like standing at the bow. The helmsman also realized the angle and speed problems 20-30 seconds before the ferry hit the guiding-in piles.  The helmsman or  someone sounded his horn, yelled " hold-on", rapid reverse, and the vessel safely bounced off the piles.  How can these USN sailors be asleep in their beds? No alarm 10-15 seconds before impact.  Seconds really matter!!! Just don't understand the apparent lack of warning? Or was there warning and just not mentioned?
