In an ideal world a safety margin of at least 150 feet (50 m) behind a yacht would be respected. I do not tow a log in inland or inshore waters, only at sea. The navigation situation in the S North Sea is quite complex, with sandbanks, coastal traffic, yachts, fishermen, commercial vessels heading in and out of the busiest port in the hemisphere, and often sub-optimal visibility. Accurate navigation is essential and I consider a log as essential for that. I am aware that GPS is much more accurate than DR, but I am not willing to rely on only one source of navigational information. I hope that the judge in court will forgive me for towing a line with equipment.
