I can't remember Hail-Bopp had a long or short trail. It was between 1Apr and 4Apr 1997. Straining my memory, we must have been at about 54.500791 -3.225984 on Google Maps heading east (blame Google for the 6 decimal places). We'd stumbled up that cutting behind us (Loft Beck), and as we came over the crest Hail-Bopp was right in front of us. I remember it was incredibly bright in the absence of light polution. When we got back to the tents there was a trail of belongings coming from them. A fox had raided the tents. My stock of packet soups all had two pinpricks in them where the fox had pierced them with its teeth, decided they were the wrong flavour and discarded them. DaveP
