I'm not sure 'taken over' is appropriate. 'Twas ever thus, on this and previous incarnations of the NavList, perhaps inevitably. Practical navigators navigate, while dreamers and historians while away the time in front of their computers.
As a dreamer myself, as well as a very-much amateur historian and even an occasional practical navigator, I understand and sympathise with your frustration.
However, the NavList is a wide church, where each of us can have his say (over the years there have been few 'hers') and its also inevitable that we tend to hear most from the more loquacious amongst us. They have their merits as well as their pedantry, meaning that there is the odd nugget of gold to be gleaned from all the dross.
This is as it should be, despite the comedy-turn occasioned by threats of litigation from the intellectually dishonest.
