I appreciate that while points of view may be slightly different (aviator vs mariner), we all still end up looking overhead!
I learned my Cel Nav serving here in the JDF Coast Guard in the 1990's, our instruction included compass checks by Azimuths and Amplitudes using Nories Tables, and Pub 249 Vol 1 (Selected Stars) and Pub 229 for sight reduction. Nowadays, other than using Excel spreadsheets to check / plan my sights, I tend to use Pub 249 Vol 2 for most sight reduction practice.
There is a lot of very good instruction / learning material available online, not least of which this one (NavList) which has a wealth of knowledge in its archive and membership! Please note NavList has a related FaceBook group also worth checking out:
