These retro prisms are ubiquitous in the world of optical instruments. I have them in all sizes from various repurposing projects. This particular one had the previous owner's interesting story attached to it. His name was Robert Hopkins and was an elite optical engineer and physicist and has written many books. That doesn't make his story true, but since the idea is absolutely sound in principle, and very simple, if not fiendishly clever, I was looking for somebody who had heard the same story for validation.

Well, for all those who haven't heard the story, consider yourself 'schooled'.

By the way, if you look carefully at second picture, taken from the front, you'll see the Apple logo and the apexes of the prisms diverging radially from the exact center of the phone's camera aperture. If you look directly into the prism, these lines diverge from the center of your pupil, independently of the orientation of the prism. It's spooky.

I have the feeling if I really sit down and try to understand your explanation of the Aiming Post Reflector, I'll learn a LOT. Thanks for sharing.
