Thanks for the holiday headscratcher. Since the linear scale factor on a Mercator chart goes the secant of the latitude my guess is that the graphical construction would be something like the one shown in the attached diagram. In it d is a distance in degrees of longitude and "swinging the arc" yields the location of the parallel of latitude at (L+d)° on the chart,
