In east longitude just subtract the east longitude from 360 which makes it equivalent to west longitude. That is what you were doing with your method.

I have solved the problem. The example given by thenauticalalmanac was for west long. I am in east long so the equation becomes long + GHA. Similarly the sign in "My Method" needs to be chosen depending on whether long is east or west.
