Thaks for the replies about Crelles tables. I understand  that Crelle is a German mathematical journal first published by August Leopold Crelle in 1826.

This thread demonstrates that it is easy to have blinkers on when studying navigation. Crelle was not part of the navigation community (at least the anglo community) and so I had not heard about him. To me navigation was all about Norie, Burton, Inman, Hughes, Burdwood, Davis, Blackburne, AC Johnson, Lecky, Bowditch, the AMN, Cotter and of course the HOxxx series.

I discovered Crelle when I glanced through a book written by an (to me) obscure person called Willis. In addition until recently I knew very little about Aquino but now know how important his contribution was.

I wonder if Willis' method would have made all of the short methods redundant?  Or like most navigation authors was he blowing his trumpet?
