Brad referred, in [10175], to an illustration in Peter Apian's "Cosmographia" I'm delighted to say that University of Oklahoma has made available a good digital copy of the complete 1575 edition of Cosmographia from their History of Science collection. The page containing the picture that Brad showed (or at least, a similar engraving) can be found at- http://hsci.ou.edu/galleries/16thCentury/Apian/1545/Apian-1545-00d4r-image/10in/ It is, of course, in Latin, and I was expelled from the Latin class at school all of 60 years ago, for incompetence. I don't know of a translation into English: does anyone else? However, I discovered, a couple of years ago, that the Bodleian Library has a 16th century edition, in French translation, and I can just about manage written French. Though even less well, 16th-century French. Anyway, I've had a go at that French, and attached is the result into English, with all the defects of a double-translation, for anyone that's interested. There are several spots where I've searched for the meaning of a 16th century French word, or guessed at it, enclosed in square brackets.
