Crossed the Bar

I regret to inform the group that an icon of celestial navigation has crossed the bar.
Bruce Bauer, author of the "Sextant Handbook", passed away on 16 July. Some of you may have known him only by reputation and from having read his book, while others may have known him personally.
Bauer, a retired US Naval Officer, Master Mariner, author, sextant authority, loving father and husband, and avid sailor, was a genuine old world gentleman with keen intellect, rapier wit and a deadpan sense of humour. Having served for several decades in the US Navy, much of it as a destroyer captain, Bauer was naturally a staunch American patriot, though not to the point where, like any thoughtful citizen, he was blind to the shortcomings of his beloved country for which he served with distinction. Bauer epitomized everything that is good about the true essence of the USA: honour, dignity, moral rectitude, and generousity.
Bauer's passing is a significant loss to our little community. It disheartens me to say that I believe it also marks another milestone in the slow demise of celestial navigation.
Rest in peace Commander Bauer. You will not be forgotten as long as there are some of us left to carry the torch.
Robert
