According to the U.S. Navy Marine Climatic Atlas of the World, Volume 5, South Pacific Ocean, the visibility in the vicinity of Howland Island in July is below 12 NM 50% of the time and below 25 NM 70% of the time. That is the maximum visibility on the standard graphs because the visibility never exceeds that by very much. So, with the visibility being below 25 NM 70% of the time what do you think the chances were, on this one particular day, that the visibility was 130 NM (more than five times greater) so that Noonan could see the horizon and do a sunrise observation? gl --- On Thu, 5/2/13, Gary LaPook <garylapook@pacbell.net> wrote:
