I made 24 (non-averaged) Hs of the Sun either side of meridian passage this lunchtime with an assistant recording Hs and time, primarily to see over how long a period a mer-pass latitude might be possible with an aircraft sextant. Then I started to play with the observations to see if an attempt at a longitude might also be possible, but my observations were so ‘noisy’ compared to the expected flat Hs curve that it barely made any sense. Is there a piece of freeware which would take a series of Height Sextants at irregular times either side of meridian passage, plot the best curve, and come up with the time of maximum Hs? I appreciate that one would have to treat such a seemingly precise result with great caution. DaveP
