If an intercept is calculated for the DR position of each sight, a round of sights can be plotted as if simultaneous. There's no need to advance or retire the LOPs. For instance, suppose a body exactly east is observed, and the intercept is 10 miles toward. Then, a few minutes later, the sun is observed to the south on the meridian and the intercept is 12 miles away. Evidently, the position should be adjusted 12 miles north and 10 east. This true at the time of the first sight, the second sight, or any convenient time, to the extent that the DR accurately calculates ship motion in the elapsed time. However, this is true only for sights reduced at the DR position. It's not valid if an assumed position (possibly tens of miles from the DR) is used for the reduction. -- Paul Hirose sofajpl.com
