Here's a photo from that ebay auction which shows nicely that this is, in fact, a vernier sextant, with a simple adjustment knob and a release. This might be a nice way to develop a 3D-printable kit today. So there's your emergency plan: you equip your vessel with a nice 3D printer, and in the event of emergency, you let it whip you up a sextant on the fly. You can even customize the color to match your boat. :)
