Slightly off-topic, nonetheless this subject here-under has been extensively addressed in this post.

French Navy and US Navy Fighter Aircraft Carrier pilots initial medical requires (/ earlier used to require ?) excellent night vision, equivalent to:

- Under the darkest night, being able to detect / spot when a smoker inhales the smoke of his cigarette, i.e. the moment when his cigarette is "glowing" red.

By the way, I forgot the most important data ... from the "Fighter Pilot Candidate" Observer the "target smoker" is assumed to be a distance  ... of 20 km (11 NM, 12 SM) .

- French Air Force - and possibly US Air Force initial medical requirements too - not so stringent for their Fighter Pilots.

- By the way too, offset / lateral "vision" - elsewhere depicted in this thread - is a must here.

This test is one the most dreaded ones by all newbies, of course and ... obviously.

From life experience, I can definitely swear that under some bad night recoveries conditions on-board Aircraft Carriers, you do need every ounce of your own night vision. Such Night vision test is certainly not "oversized".
