I certainly agree with using tree branches or roof corners. The only thing I'd add is that smartphones can be helpful with getting the initial binoculars view. The phone's compass is generally reliable to 5 degrees or so and the inclinometer to better than 1 degree. (The phone's planetarium app will give you Venus's azimuth and elevation.) Once you have the tree-branch tip at the correct point, a quick small sweep in aziumth with the binoculars is all it takes.
I use the Theodolite and Stellarium apps on iOS.
