Woohoo! I went outside, aimed my camera at the moon, came back inside and lo-and-behold, there was Aldebaran in the image.
I got so excited that I went back out to see if I could get a photo of Orion. The closer I got to the sun, the more skyglow I got, even in the crystal clear sky that Edmonton is sporting today. So I was not able to get Orion at all, but I DID get a shot of what I am pretty sure is Sirius.
It is hard to know for sure that I got Sirus without seeing other stars for context. For this shot, I was pointing my camera not at the moon that I could see, but by compass azimuth, to where I inferred Sirus had to be. So Aldebaran is the one star that I am 100% certain I have properly identified.
Attached is my photo of the Moon/Aldebaran, plus the Sirius shot. I am also attaching a heavens-above.com screen capture to show the guidance I used to point my camera.
Regarding the notations at the top and bottom of the photos: the clock on my camera is running on MST instead of MDT. I did have my camera save the image in RAW format, so I would not suffer from any smoothing of pixels.
