I tell people that we are reducing the large circle of equal altitudes to a segment that will fit on their charts.

Here is the first sentence of the definition of "sight reduction" from The Norton Encyclopedic Dictionary of Navigation:
"The process of deriving from a celestial observation the information needed for establishing a line of position is called sight reduction."
It is not so much reducing the size of the chart, but you are reducing a larger amount of information to a smaller amount.

I know what they are and can use them but if someone asked me to give a definition of the term sight reduction I would be beat. Cannot help thinking it is to do with bringing the GP's of the HB's close to our DR therefore making a reduction of the size of the chart required to make a plot. From about a mile square to the size of a plotting sheet.Mike
