I use the numeric keypad on my laptop, but instead of alt+0176 I use alt+248. That is also a degree symbol and saves one keystroke. I don't find it too difficult or bothersome and I've used it enough now that I can do it very quickly with little effort.
I also use the keypad for lots of other symbols, especially when typing words or names in other languages. Like González. The "á" is alt+160. There are many useful symbols one can access this way. So many that I made a chart (attached), which I cut out and keep right next to my computer for reference. Unfortunately, not all of the symbols I use are available with this method. But there are enough that I still find it very useful. It even lets me type one of Frank's favorite symbols: ÷, lol.
One can even make tables and simple graphics with some of the symbols, as in the .txt file, also attached. (I would have demonstrated directly on NavList, but there is a feature which adds an extra carriage return so I don't think it would work here.)
But thanks for the tip, Frank! I might end up using that too, actually.
Cheers!
