Ah, but as a former New England resident, I can tell you that we are often conservative with regard to the latest and greatest technologies. So maybe GPS will be considered the "black art"
I suspect this is due to all the disasters that hit New England regularly (nor'easters, blizzards, hurricanes, even tornadoes (Massachusetts actually gets quite a few, but because of its hills and mountains they never grow to significant size)). So, in contrast to Californians (my current home) who assume their climatic bliss will continue forever, New Englanders are, in my experience, much more likely to have a backup plan.
