    Details of Freiberger AH
    From: Igor S.

    Hello everyone,
I am new to navlist and I was following with great interest posts and discussions from earlier years about Artificial Horizons.
Does anyone here who has Freiberger artificial horizon or had practical experience with it earlier? My first question is what kind of glass do they use? It looks very much like a welding protective glass or a ceramic glass (ceran) or a black plexiglass ...
suggesting the use of Carrara glass:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigmented_structural_glass or https://www.decopix.com/the-vitrolite-story/   which turns out to be NOT very well known among local glass specialists here in Europe (kind of extincted exotic type of glass material).

One can also find photos on internet of many beautiful old artificial horizons also with a black slab of a glass ( prior to developing pigmented structural glass in 1900).

Some time ago I've made AH (see photos below) using First Surface Mirror (FSM) similar to that of Ed Popko https://NavList.net/m2.aspx/Tripod-Mirror-Artificial-Horizon-EdPopko-apr-2015-g31098  and made successful measurements.
I have an idea to make another AH which would be more compact, practical suitable for both stars (FSM) and sun (black glass) altitude measurements and to use more accurate leveling vials.
I think mirror-based AH is an important piece of nautical equipment especially for students of Maritime Academies and Collages to have some practice and encouraging results without natural horizon.
    kind regards,
    Igor
