Re: Determining List by Vega DSLR Image

Last night I experimented again with Vega to see if image quality could be improved. Not much luck. There was a slight improvement by going to ISO 1600, 1/20 sec, f2, and using the camera shutter timer to avoid manual shake.

To compare see this mornings camera lunar image of Jupiter and near limb Moon which was taken at 1/400 sec, ISO 800, f4, infinite focus while hand holding a 200 mm fixed prime lens. Jupiter shows at 1 minute of arc in diameter and the Moon has a sharp limb. Dim stars are absent. Working out the lunar for 2754 pixels and a 200mm lens multiplier of .0975 moa/px has the error at a respectable -0.5'

Off the shelf digital cameras aren't sensitive enough yet to capture full star fields with high shutter speeds yet but getting there.

Vega is captured again last night right on the meridian. Image 007 settings were ISO 800, f2, 2 seconds, infinite focus. Vega shows as a 15 minute of arc blurred disc. Not the best exposure results for measuring star to star distances. Even so a measurement between Vega and HIP 91235 came in at 5* 19.8' which is within 1 minute of arc vs. true distance.

A daylight image is also attached for a better look at the main mast, furler, and rigging.

    Frank,

Tonight I shall try again using the built in shutter timer to avoid manual operation of the shutter. Vega should then be a symmetrical disc. ISO jumped to 800 and shutter reduced to 1 second should produce a sharper image without ghosts.
