Thank you for that informative explanation about
calibration of a fluxgate compass. As a point of
possible interest, I just had an autopilot with
fluxgate compass professionally installed. The
installer chose to mount it on the inside of the
transom facing aft. The system has provision for
setting an offset in software, which is set at 180
degrees plus or minus any additional offset to
compensate for any deviation from parallel to the
centerline in mounting. Calibrating the compass by
turning in circles was done as part of the sea trials.
