A few years ago I built a very simple crystal set radio and used a small kite to fly a long wire antenna astern. I managed to get pretty regular and accurate time signals on long wave (Mostly BBC), but did occassionaly, especially at night, pick up distant stations from thousands of miles away.
Does anyone know of any historical record of ocean sailors in the 1920s and 1930s using such a simple device for time signals. So far I have not found any. BBC time signals were available world wide from the mid 1920s so could/should have been used?
Trqnsistors better no doubt but not essential I think. Fairly simple valve tube radios, often home built, were also pretty common in the 1930s.Again, I haven't found any published anecdotes.
Re. Slocum and depression. Exactly what I thought on reading it first time.Also sailing + celnav a good treatment for this I have found!
Re. Lunars. Yes I am an antique antiquarian enthusiast! Also a good treament for depression!
