Yes. I agree. I have been thinking I could slather some epoxy on the handle of my favorite sextant and then glue my smartphone on there, except that this device appears to be from about twenty years ago. Less smartphone, more of a smart "pager". But it does appear that it attempts to read the sextant directly from the main axis. There's an attachment point behind the index mirror. That's clever, but what's the point? Reading the scale and the micrometer is not the hard part when taking sights!
Read through the manual: https://psminstrumentation.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ScanjetPSM-Digital-Sextant-Manual-rv.0.pdf. There are some interesting details and a few problematic ideas in there. Get a position fix from a single Sun sight... if you know the Sun's azimuth! Sure. Why not?
There are some headings in Korean characters. I assume that's where it was designed/developed.
