Hey, guys, you missed it! What Frank was describing was an iPhone!
(doing everything else it does but phoning)
And, oh, Dick Tracy's device was worn on his wrist, so that violates Frank's "pocket watch-sized device"

Re iThingie. I dig it. BTW: Didn't Dick Tracy have one of them thar then? -Hewitt On 1/24/09, frankreed@historicalatlas.com <frankreed@historicalatlas.com> wrote:Peter, you wrote: "On the other hand (ho ho) I'd rather wear a watch with an analogue display, as a quick glance 'tells the time' quite well enough when precision isn't needed. A digital display needs mental interpretation, mental rounding, as in: "19:38:52 .. hmm .. that means its about twenty to eight". Learning as much from a graphical display, which is what an analogue watch-face offers, is much quicker, and involves no conscious effort at all." I agree. Within a short period of time, common consumer watches should have no problem switching from one type of display to another, and I would guess some already do. It's merely a software problem. Watches are rapidly converging with tiny computers. Myself, I want a modern pocket watch --a pocket-sized device that will let me select an analog or a digital time display. It should allow me to set alarms and maybe include a planning calendar. And what the heck, let's throw in a web browser, high-speed Internet access, maybe GPS, music and video playing software, some cool games, a basic camera... and, dare I dream, the ability to make phone calls, too. Hey! I think I should patent this idea. I will call it the iThingie. -FER >
