Yesterday I thought I saw a way of reconciling our points of view, but was interrupted before I could write it up. Now I'm grateful for the interruption. The bright idea was a flash-in-the-pan.
I still think the way Trevor and I see this is right MOST of the time. But I'm not sure.
As others have suggested, we need an atmospheric scientist to set up models our mathematicians can work with. That, or a large body of data.
